After reading Stan Voth's "Letter to the Editor" in the June 27 Shafter Press, I feel compelled to state a few more facts. The Richland School District is in a sorry state of affairs, with approximately a half-a- million-dollar deficit. The Richland School Board trustees, with a 4-1 vote, just approved the second deficit spending budget in two years. This budget approval included the creation of two new nonteaching positions, shifting money away from classroom instruction. As enrollment decreases each year, mainly because of...

  • Pastor's Corner - July 25, 2019

Pastor Jim Neal, First Southern Baptist Church, Shafter|Updated Jul 26, 2019

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” --Genesis 6:8 I am not going to bore you with how I happened upon this verse concerning the time of the great flood and righteousness of one man; however, what struck me was the concept of grace. That word is used in so many ways and situations today, the meaning can become quite convoluted and even watered down. Many say “grace” before a meal, which means, of course, the giving of thanks. When it comes to bills or insuran...

The Shafter Community Band put on a free concert in Mannel Park on Sunday evening, drawing a crowd to listen to a variety of marches performed by the local musicians. With the gazebo and walkways dotted with American flags, the site was awash in red, white and blue. Fittingly, the All-American sounds of John Phillip Souza rang out as the flags flapped in the light breeze, waving to the beat of the music. There were several composers on the playlist in addition to the "March...

  • SYC gives kids a fun place

Rochelle VanderHelm, The Shafter Press|Updated Jul 25, 2019

A few doors down, the little ones get ready to blow black paint all over their papers. Hopefully, in a couple of minutes the inky dots will turn into a beautiful, if lopsided, tree. "Miss Angie" gives instructions, and the children begin to spread their paint. One is disappointed with the result of his huffing and puffing, and resorts to...
