Teams move on to postseason

The Shafter varsity basketball team took on Kennedy on Feb. 4 in a very intense game that the Generals ended up losing, 77-72. The next day they played rival Wasco in a win-or-go- home game, since the Generals had to have a .500 record to make the playoffs. The Generals came to play and beat the Tigers 61-41. They finished 6th in league play with a 5-7 record, and had a 14-14 record over all. The Generals got the 16th seed for Division 3 and will play at the number 1 seed Mt. Whitney. The team says they are looking to "shock the Section."

The Lady Generals basketball team had a home game against Kennedy on Feb. 4, and they lost a heartbreaker after Kennedy scored to take the lead with just 7 seconds to play. But the Lady Generals bounced back with a lopsided victory against rival Wasco, 55-36. They finished the regular season with a record of 8-4, which was good enough for 2nd place in league. Their overall record is 16-7, and they have the 7th seed for the Division 2 playoffs. They will have a home game against number 10 seed Monache.

The Shafter Generals boys soccer team started off with an impressive win against Kennedy Feb. 4, winning the game, 4-2. Then on Wednesda,y the Generals took on rival Wasco in a very close game that ended in a 1-1 tie.. The Generals 4-6-2 record got them 4th in league play, and an overall record of 7-10-7. The Generals did not make the postseason, but they played hard every game and had a great season. Tristan Maldonado, a senior on the team, said, "I'm going to miss playing with these groups of guys, and it was a fun ride for these past four years of high school soccer."

The lady Generals soccer team had a game vs. Kennedy on Tuesday that they won by a score of 2-1. Then on Monday they took on rival Wasco for 2nd place in league. The Generals won the game 2-1. They had a 9-2-1 record in league play and a 14-9-2 record overall for the regular season. The seedings for Division 5 have not came out yet, but it looks like the lady Generals will most likely have a home game because of their dominant performance in league play.

The Shafter lady wrestling team had their valley meet this week at Mission Oak High school. Esmeralda Torres took 4th, Stephania Ledesma took 5th, Cloie Hernandez took 5th, Areyal Hernandez took 8th, and Jennifer Fernandez took 8th place. These 5 girls all qualified to for the Masters meet for a chance to qualify for State. For the boys, Christian Garza took 7th, Nate Gonzalez took 8th and Rafa Zamudio took 5th, which all secured them spots for Masters. Fernando Carreno, Conner Rubalcado and Richard Herrera all finished 9th and are alternates for the Central Section Master Meet.
