Spring sports start up

Spring sports are officially underway at Shafter High school. The sports include boys golf, boys tennis, swimming, softball, baseball and track.

The boys tennis team has a bunch of talent ,and they also have a new coach in charge. A Shafter High grad, Teddy Bloemhof was brought in to help the program get back on track. When at Shafter High, Bloemhof was best known for his play on the football field, where he was a force to be reckoned with.With the new coach and competitive drive, the Generals tennis team will look to have a great season.

The Generals boys golf team is coached by Kevin Eubanks, and they will look to have a great year. Coming back on the team is Christian Valdivia, who is already a two- time varsity starter.

The Generals swim team is looking to have a strong year for Shafter. Coming back to lead the team is Anthony Mestaz, who went to varsity last year as a junior and will look to get their again this year. The swim team had a good year last year and could be be SSL champs for the 2019 season.

The Generals baseball team is coached by Brent Fulce. The Generals only won three games last season, but they have already matched that this season in tournament play. Their most recent win was against Frazier Mountain and was very impressive in their 17-3 performance. Leading the team is Captain Richard Herrera, who said, “It’s a great feeling to be a captain, and it also teaches me great responsibility for later in life.” The Generals’ first league game will be this Wednesday vs. Cesar Chavez.

The Generals softball team had a great season last year, making it all the way to the Division 5 semifinals. The coaches for the Lady Generals are Julia Garcia and Sharaya Durant. This Generals team is loaded with talent and so far are running over everyone they’ve played so far. They’ve beaten South, North, Immanuel and Frazier Mountain. One key returner coming back for the Generals is Anissa Bernal, who says, ”Last year’s loss has motivated this team even more to win a Valley championship this year.” The four-year varsity player says “it’s very emotional” about this year being her last to play with all her friends.

The softball team has their league opener against Cesar Chavez this week.

The Generals track team is looking to have another impressive season this year. Coming back to the team is speedster Tristan Maldonado and Big Tom Richardson. Richardson is currently No. 10 in the state for the shot pu!.

The Generals have the Kern Invitational Friday at Liberty, where they will look to show out.
