SHS open SSL play

The Shafter High baseball and softball teams opened league play last week after a busy nonleague season.

The Generals baseball team is 5-6 overall and 0-1 in league after a 22-3 loss to Arvin. The Generals are coached by Brent Fulce and are looking to even their league record with an SSL game against McFarland and Taft. The Generals already have one victory against their rival Wasco, with an 8-4 win in tournament play.

The Lady Generals softball team is off to a roaring start, trying to top last year's record-breaking season. Shafter went on a tear last season and reeled off 13 straight wins on their way to an appearance in the Division V semifinal game.

This season, the Lady Generals have wins over South, 8-0; North by a 14-0 score; Immanual, 18-0; and Frazier Mountain, 24-2. Coached by Julia Garcia, the Lady Generals only losses of the year have been 6-0 to powerhouse Ridgeview and a 4-3 loss to Division I Centennial.

SHS has outscored their opponents so far this season by a score of 97-12. With the pitching of Anissa Bernal and Nataly Espinoza, the Lady Generals have four shutouts to their credit. The Lady Generals have a 5-2 overall record and 1-0 in SSL play.

Shafter opened league play with a 23-3 win against the Bears of Arvin. Shafter opened the game with 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back.

The Lady Generals will get their main competition this year from a tough McFarland team and perennial powerhouse Taft, who are Shafter's opponents this coming week.
