Boys' night out at Golden Oak

In a switch, it's a Mother/Son Dance

Golden Oak Elementary School expanded on a tradition they have had for years when they held a special dance the Friday before Mother's Day. According to Principal Anna Marie Mendoza, Golden Oak has held a Father/Daughter dance for years, with the event holding a special place in families' hearts as fathers have a special time spent with their daughters. Mendoza said that this year they decided to give the same chance to the mothers of the school, giving them a chance to attend their first Mother/Son Dance.

Over 100 mothers and sons gathered in the Golden Oak Cafeteria, which was decorated in the theme for the evening. The theme was "Superheroes." Students dressed up in characters from Superman to Batman to Captain America, as well as their mothers, who dressed up, too.

Mendoza, Vice Principal Raymond Carr and staff served the guests a spaghetti dinner before the festivities began. The dance floor was lit up with strobe lights and colors, with a DJ supplying a variety of music including oldies, tejano, and contemporary pop and disco.

A photo booth included different props for the mothers and sons able to take home a keepsake.

The boys started off the dance with the Chicken Dance, followed by a more current hit, "Uptown Funk." There were also dance contests during the event, with the attendees showing off their skills in a variety of dances. "This was a special evening that has been so popular for the fathers and daughters," Mendez said. "We knew that our mothers would appreciate the chance to have that special night with their sons."

The night was made possible by the staff at Golden Oak and also their PTO, who holds several events throughout the year.
