Kids learn about safety at Shafter Youth Center

These are some of the topics covered last week in the Shafter Youth Center's Safety Week.

The FBI was investigating the scene when they heard of the great kids on site. Kids learned about what the FBI does and how they work locally on special cases. Agents shared their knowledge and demonstrated equipment used on the job.

The American Red Cross stopped in to make sure that kids are ready in case of emergency. The Pillow Case Project was presented, and the kids were ready to take on the challenge. Kids learned about the items needed to have ready in the event of an evacuation is called.

The Shafter Police Department sent over some of their finest personnel. Kids got to hear about different topics like bullying, bike registration, knowing their address, the importance of 911 and other similar tips. Kids got to see a police car up close, as well as an undercover police car, complete with lights and sirens.

With the summer heat and increasing numbers of grass fires, representatives of the Kern County Fire Department talked to the kids about fire safety. They had a chance to learn about a fire truck and see all the different tools needed to do a firefighter's job.

Safety Week was one of the many theme weeks ahead at the SYC this summer. Others include Animal Week, Patriotic Week, Transportation Week and Art Week.
