Shafter's DYW competing at state level

Shafter's Distinguished Young Woman, Kristen McGuire, will be competing in Bakersfield at the state competition from July 14-21.

The event will be held at California State University, Bakersfield, in the Dore Theater. The preliminary competition begins on July 14 with interviews, rehearsals for the Fitness routines, as well as the numbers performed throughout the competition. Each participant will be staying with a host family in Bakersfield and will have opportunities to meet all of the other participants throughout the state.

The winner of the state competition will go on to represent California in the national competition to held in Mobile, Ala.

McGuire is the daughter of Mark and Susan McGuire. She dazzled the crowd with her tap dance routine at the local competition, performing a number from the musical "Chicago." McGuire is sponsored by Richland Chevrolet.

McGuire beat out 16 other participants for the local title. She did not win any individual phases of the competition, but the well-rounded young woman scored so well overall that she won the competition, along with its top scholarship.

McGuire has been busy serving the city at different community events, most recently, at the July 3 Fireworks Show at Shafter High, in which she led the Pledge of Allegiance and sang The Star Spangled Banner.

Performance nights will be Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and can be bought at squareup.com/store/distinguished-young-women-california.

Flowers can be ordered and delivered through Sun Country Flowers. Cards of encouragement can be sent to 330 Garnsey Ave., Bakersfield 93309.
