Helen Marie Schmidt

Sept. 25, 1939 – Sept. 24, 2020

Helen Marie Schmidt was born on Sept. 25, 1939, in Eufaula, Okla., to Joseph and Sara Belle Smith. She went home to be with the Lord on her 81st birthday, Sept. 25, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Jerry Schmidt; her parents; her sister Betty and brother Bob; children James "Ricky" Guenther and Pamela Huckabee; and grandson Brian Huckabee. She is survived by her daughter Deana Marie (Schmidt) Thompson and her sons-in-law, Dale Huckabee and Corwin Thompson; grandchildren Amber (Huckabee) Brewer and husband TJ, Cody Huckabee, Dustin Huckabee and wife Kylie, Courtney Thompson, and Aidan Thompson; great grandchildren Faith, Broen, Jorden, Tugston, Toby and Rory; siblings Ruby Haworth and Joe Smith; siblings-in-law Carol Smith, Jim and Lucy Schmidt, and Scott Hammack; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special place in her heart.

Helen spent several years working as a beautician before settling down to raise her family in Shafter. She devoted her life to ensuring they were raised knowing the Lord. She was an ever-present volunteer for school and extracurricular activities of her kids.

For many years, Helen was a source of inspiration to students at the Teen Challenge Men's Ranch, cutting hair and doing seamstress work for the men. She was a member of the women's auxiliary for the Shafter Fire Department. Helen enjoyed many years serving as a deaconess at the Congregational Bible Church of Shafter alongside many longtime friends. She greatly enjoyed the many years spend attending the ladies Bible study on Thursday mornings until her health didn't allow it.

Helen enjoyed travelling with Jerry on many adventures including cruises, trips to the Central Coast and visiting family.

Since losing Jerry in 2011, Helen's poor physical health began to prevent her from taking part in many of the activities she enjoyed. In spite of this fact, she loved her family well. She continued strong in her walk with the Lord and was a guiding light and inspiration to those close to her.

Helen will be greatly missed by all.
