Wasco parks district seeks grant to upgrade pools

The Recreation and Parks District is applying for a $8.2 million grant for two new pools.

The board unanimously voted to put in the pools, board member Sharon Sharp said.

Sharp said that the grant has a Dec. 14 deadline and is part of Proposition 68.

The board had a special meeting the week of Oct. 5 when it decided to move forward with the architect’s plans for two pools.

Sharp said one pool would be a swimming and teaching pool and the other would be for adult/senior swim and other aquatic events and will be solar heated.

The timeline is unknown at this point because the district needs to fill out the required grant application.

The district is also coordinating a Drive-Thru Trunk or Treat event for Friday, Oct. 30, at Barker Park.

“As of Oct. 16, we have 18 participants who have signed up after receiving their packet,” Sharp said. “We are hoping to get around 30 participants.” Sharp said that the packet explains the logistics of the event.

In addition, the Recreation and Parks District will be having a movie night on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Barker Square where Café 101 and Tropicana Market are located on Highway 46. More information will be forthcoming.

If anyone is interested in signing up for the Trunk or Treat event, contact the Recreation and Parks District at 758-3081.

Sharp also mentioned that the parks would be opening up slowly. One family at a time will be allowed in the park for a 30-minute maximum visit.

“If someone else wants to enjoy the park, they must wait in the parking lot until the previous visitors leave the park area,” Sharp said. “We want to continue following COVID-19 protocols with the wearing of masks and safe distancing.”
