Job Fair brings local employment opportunities

The City of Wasco was instrumental in coordinating a Job Fair held Thursday, August 26 at the Veteran's Recreation Hall on Poplar Avenue.

Accounting Specialist 1 Nellie Garcia, Administrative Assistant 1 Claudia Garcia and City Office Manager Nancy Vela manned the City of Wasco's table where they had job opening information on the city's website cityofwasaco.org so applications can be filled out online.

The city prefers that applications be filled out online, however, they still accept handwritten applications with a resume attached.

Another vendor at the event was United Staffing, with Elizabeth Martinez and Hector De La Rosa manning that table. They cover job opportunities in Bakersfield, Wasco, McFarland and Buttonwillow.

"There are a lot of opportunities out there now," Martinez said.

Christian Sanchez holds down the fort in the company's Bakersfield office. Sanchez said most of the open positions are in the agricultural area now because of the freeze.

Behavior Momentum Services is all over Kern County with another new office opening in Wasco on 7th Street. Manning the table for Behavior Momentum Services were Office Assistant Haley Martinez and Office Manager Alissa Soto.

This office provides services to youngsters with special needs. There are two offices in Wasco and three in Bakersfield.

"We take clients from 2 years old to 28 years' old," Soto said.

Wonderful Orchards was advertising for general labor positions. Manning the table for Wonderful were Director Spray and Field Operations Valentin Medina, Manager, Spray and Field Operations Iva Rizo and Spray and Field Operations Intern Javier Garcia.

Another popular vendor at the job fair was Safety and Human Resources Jordan Fitch of Quinn Construction. Their company is currently working on a project in Shafter and specializes in grading and has construction positions available. This family-run operation also seeks laborers, equipment operators and field personnel.

Holloway sells to farmers. They were awarded 5000, 1253 on the list of the fastest growing companies in the United States.

Manning the table were Human Resources Stevi Flood and VP, Director of Financial Services Jordan Bunt. The company has been in business since 1932.

The four employees with the Department of Corrections were enjoying their time at the job fair. All four were chatty and welcome to any questions. This table offered a video visit. Manning the table were Correctional Plant Manager II Scott DeGough, Associate Governmental Program Analyst Maria Arias, Correctional Officers Monte Carolina and Mark Thompson.

For Phase I of pursuing employment with the State of California, the Department of Corrections provided the directions to applying for a state job by letting candidates know everyone must pass an open exam to establish list eligibility prior to applying for most job openings with the state.
