Kiwanis gives over 135 boxes of food to families in need

The Shafter Kiwanis Club held their annual Food Basket Giveaway this past week, doling out over 135 boxes of food to the community.

There was enough food collected this year for 75 families to receive food boxes. The organization has been holding the event for the past few years, giving families the ingredients for a holiday meal. This year saw a record-breaking amount of food that was donated for the event.

Canned food was collected by the local schools, with the classes holding a contest in which the classes who collected the most cans of food won a pizza party.

A large number of volunteers were on hand to assist.

For packing the donations, the Kiwanis had the assistance of the Shafter High Lady Generals' basketball team.

"It was such a blessing to get those extra hands to help with the preparation of the boxes," said Kiwanis member Debbie Haley.

Shafter Healthy Start gave the club a list of qualified families who were in need of the help this holiday season. Each family received two large boxes of food, which contained canned food that was collected, as well as flour, beans, tortillas, rice and sugar that was purchased by the Kiwanis from Apple Market.

Those families who were selected were able to drive by the drop-off site and pick up their boxes.
