The Wasco High softball team is back for a regular season for the first time in two years.

The team is currently 2-2 in the regular season, which is more wins than any other team in the South Sequoia league so far. The team beat Ridgeview High from Bakersfield, 14-0, and Bakersfield Christian, 1-0.

“After two short seasons, we are excited and blessed to get back to playing a regular season.” said Sonia Wedel, head coach for softball at Wasco High.

This year is Wedel’s ninth year as head coach for Wasco High’s varsity team, an endeavor which began in the year 2000 when she started coaching for the junior varsity team. Wedel is joined by three former Wasco High players on her staff.

The past two seasons were cut short as a result of the covid-19 pandemic and although restrictions are less tight this year, covid continues to be a hurdle for the softball team.

A player being quarantined during league and postseason play would put the team in quite a disadvantage, meaning the health of the players is one of Wedel’s top concerns along with academic eligibility.

As is the case for most Wasco High sports, the softball team’s greatest rival is Shafter High. Wasco’s first interleague match against Shafter takes place on April 19.

One of the team’s other toughest competitors is Taft, Wedel said.

“Taft is always competitive and has been a constant thorn in our side for as long as I can remember,” Wedel said. “ A victory against either team [Taft and Shafter] is icing on the cake.”

The first interleague game will be against McFarland on March 22 at 4 p.m. The game will take place in Wasco High’s softball field.
