Planet Dance to present summer gala

Planet Dance Studio specializes in the art of jazz, hip-hop, ballet, tap and competitive dancing and is open to youth ages 4-18.

The studio was first opened in 2002 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. To honor that, the studio is planning a Summer Gala tribute to the beloved singer Selena on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon. It will take place at the Shafter High School Auditorium.

"We expect the turnout will be great ,with 700 -900 people joining in on the celebration," said studio director Jacob Hernandez.

The dancers have been practicing diligently since April in preparation.

"They are passionate about dancing, and this is a way to showcase their talent and all of the hard work they have been putting in to make sure their presentation is a success and that guests will enjoy themselves," Hernandez said.

"The theme of Selena came to me last summer, and I thought it would make for a special show. Who doesn't love Selena?"

There will be 70 students performing 17 different numbers.

"We are excited to share our first performance of the year with the community, highlighting all of the efforts made by our staff and the dancers. It will be particularly memorable for our first-year members," said Hernandez.

The Planet Dance Studio team, in addition to Hernandez, is composed of a staff of five experienced and passionate teachers.

"We have over 100 years combined of expertise," said Hernandez.

The dancers have participated in many national and statewide competitions throughout the years, taking home top prizes.

They recently participated in the Star Power competition in San Diego and were acknowledged for their superior skills.

The team scored high enough to once again qualify for the nationals, and will be attending this event June 19-24 in Las Vegas.

"There will be almost 30 different national teams that they will be competing against, and I am anticipating we will do well," said Hernandez.

Through these competitions, the students develop their leadership skills, respect for others, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

"We pride ourselves in bringing the best that we have to all of our students because we want them to have a fun time while improving their self-confidence and relationships with others.

"The Selena gala will be wonderful because we bring the community together in another celebration of dance from Planet Dance Studio. We are ready for everyone to experience this in a live setting after the covid restrictions."

Pre-sale tickets are $18 and can be purchased at the studio, 641 F St., Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Tickets at the door are $20. For more information, call 661-240-5924.
