The Shafter Kiwanis Club recognized some Terrific Kids at their recent luncheon, honoring those students who best display the trait of the month for the Terrific Kids program. This month, the trait was responsibility.

From Richland Junior High, the Student Council was honored for their responsibility they show as they lead the students during the school year.

Those honored were President Marley Munoz, Activities Director Layla Ortega, Vice President Tatania Anfulo, Treasurer Illiana Molina, and Secretary Illeana Roque. They were presented by Assistant Principal Mrs. Mord.

Joining the Richland Junior High students were the students from Sequoia Elementary. Principal Janean Johnson and Assistant Principal Aguilera presented Damian Chavez and Daleyza Iribe Cortez with the honor of Terrific Kids.

For Redwood Elementary, the students honored were Leonardo Medina and Giselle Diamond. They were given their awards by Principal Ivonne Hernandez and Assistant Principal Antonio Juarez. Principal Diane Barnett and Assistant Principal Jose Montelongo presented awards to Francisco Buenrostro and Natalie Raya from Golden Oak Elementary School.

Terrific Kids is a program that recognizes outstanding students that demonstrate characteristics that displays the values of the program. The program promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance. "Terrific" is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.

Students work with their classroom teachers to establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance and school work. Students benefit from this program by building character, develop leadership skills, and attain important life skills known as developmental assets that help them make smart choices.
