Serving the community since 1922

Wasco FFA has busy February

In February, Wasco Future Farmer's of America and the AG Boosters hosted the 28 Days of Winning fundraiser.

There were prizes, and every day there was a live stream video on Facebook and Instagram announcing the daily winners. The Ag Boosters is a nonprofit organization designed to support the Wasco High School FFA program, including providing scholarships to members.

Fourteen students received their 2022 California FFA State degree. This degree is the highest in the California FFA Association. Criteria for this include demonstrating an exceptional amount of time put into their supervised agriculture experience, leadership skills and service to their community.

A huge congratulations to Thomas Joshua Cooley, Layla Duran, Jalie Grundt, Jimea Acosta, Samantha Garcia, Rigoberto Hurtado, Carson Jennings, Mandi Murrieta, Erick Perez, Gerardo Perez, Juan Carlos Pimentel, Jasmine Ramos, Issac Ruddell, and Lilliana Valdez for receiving their state degree.

Seven of our chapter members competed at Regionals. Amber Newby and Nati Crane, who competed in impromptu, will represent our region at the state competition.

The other members who competed at Regionals were Sesilia Rodriguez, who competed in Creed Recitation, Samantha Garcia and Lindsay Lee, who competed in Extemporaneous, Jalie Grundt, who competed in Prepared Public Speaking and Dayana Limon Santiago and Henry Marin, who competed in Job Interview categories.

Eighteen members of the Wasco FFA chapter attended MFE (Made For Excellence) and ALA (Advanced Leadership Academy). Both conferences focus on expanding the horizons for our young leaders within our chapter while instilling in them the confidence to serve others and how to collaborate with others to achieve a shared goal.

Wasco FFA also participated in National FFA week, from Feb. 22-26. There were many fun planned events, including a scavenger hunt, dress-up days, and a 5K run where community members also participated.

In other news, two livestock were born at our school farm. Students participating in the AG Animal and Veterinary Science courses will be applying their knowledge to assist in their development.

On Feb. 26, two delegates from Wasco FFA, Juan Carlos Pimental, and Amber Newby, attended the San Joaquin Regional meeting. A special congratulations to Samantha Garcia for being the 2022-2023 San Joaquin Region Vice President-elect. As a regional officer, she will be representing the South Valley.
