Peterson Auto Supply has operated in Wasco since 1948. Over the years, it has gone through multiple owners. Mathew Wankum purchased the company in January 2022 from his father, who worked there from 1978 until he bought it in 2000.
Wankum grew up around the shop and has spent the last 17 years learning the business.
"I've been here ever since I was born. It is all I know. My plan was always to be the owner, and I have never had any other desire for any other job. As a kid, I liked being here," he said.
It is a family business, working side by side with other longtime employees. The team of five has over 100 years of combined experience.
His father, Greg, now works as the manager, while his brother, Marcus, serves as an automotive specialist.
Peterson's mainly sells auto parts and other essential automotive needs such as brakes, filters, belts, hoses, spark plugs and anything related to tune-ups. They recently added farm and agricultural supplies to their line of parts and services.
"We have bearings, belts, rakes and shovels for the irrigators and farm workers. We have added numerous other products, like farm spray supplies for rigs, shakers, harvesters and sweepers."
As a Carquest dealer, Peterson's has access to a full line of parts.
Peterson's is known for their knowledge and customer service. Wankum notes that most their competition is corporate-owned. Not being a big corporation allows them to provide a small-town feel to shopping. They have many loyal customers who have been with them for years.
"We are trusted for our quality service, tremendous experience and expertise, all in a friendly environment, Wankum said. "We try hard to fulfill every order and find parts that are difficult to get a hold of."
"Our customers keep coming back because we make sure we find what they need and treat each of them really well. We don't quit until we make them happy with our work."
Wankum said the best part of the business is seeing and meeting new people.
"I like working every day in an industry that I enjoy."
Peterson's is an integral part of the Wasco community, supporting many youth activities. They have sponsored Little League baseball, swimming, and Wasco Bengals football and cheer teams.
"Pretty much any kid that walks through the door, we will help them. We also love to sponsor the FFA students with their different projects."
