It has been an exciting run leading up to the Miss Wasco Rose Queen pageant, set for Thursday, Sept. 8. The candidates have been practicing since May and will continue up until the title winner is announced.
On pageant day, before the girls step foot on stage, there will be a luncheon for the contestants and their mothers, concluding with an interview of each contestant.
Another segment that takes place before the pageant is a scholastic portion, where the grades and extracurricular activities of the contestants are taken into account by a separate panel of judges.
The evening portion of the pageant will consist of modeling, physical fitness, talent and formal segments.
"The queen will be responsible for representing Wasco the entire year she will reign," said Pageant Director Nicole Sanchez. "This includes special events and functions that the City of Wasco will hold."
She will attend the Wasco Rose Parade, the Wine and Roses event, the Christmas parade, new business ribbon cuttings and many other events the community holds.
Candidates say they are thrilled to participate.
"It has been a wonderful and exciting experience to run for Miss Wasco. I've had the privilege of meeting great new people and creating lifelong memories," said Nevaeh Snow.
She said she has been hoping to be queen since the age of 8.
"When I was younger, I remember aspiring to be just like the girls who were Miss Wasco Rose Queen. They always had such a positive influence on the community, which inspired me to be a contestant."
Makenna Gebhardt said, "I love running for Rose Queen. I have built so many bonds with amazing people and have some of the best times with them."
The candidates encourage those girls that are eligible to go for it.
"I would tell young ladies in my community that would be interested in running for Rose Queen in the future to believe in themselves and do it," said Daniela Ruiz. "It's a pageant where you will have tons of fun, meet new girls and bond altogether."
"It is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, make new friends, become more confident and have so much fun all in one," said Noelia Valera. "These are the types of moments that you would like to keep in your memories and cherish forever."
The experience has been fun and special for the candidates. They can't wait to showcase their pride and enthusiasm.
"This will be a memory that they can share forever. When you're on stage, you feel magical," said Grace Derington.
The girls say they are enjoying the experience.
"So far, running for Rose Queen has been so much fun. Getting to spend many hours two days a week with these girls has been a blast, and I can't wait for it all to come together," said Ensley Mehlberg.
"I've made so many lasting memories," Sabrina Miramontes agreed.
Director Sanchez invites the community to come out and support the pageant this year.
"These girls have worked so hard this summer, and it's going to be a night you don't want to miss. Tickets go on sale at the end of August, so be on the lookout."
