Serving the community since 1922

Alma Virginia Nixon

July 21, 1928 – Dec. 23, 2022

Virginia A. Nixon was born July 21, 1928, in Santa Rita, NM. She entered eternal life Dec. 23, 2022, in Shafter, surrounded by her loving family. She was 94 years old, the oldest of four children born to Opal D. and Jesse E. Carr.

Virginia's family moved from state to state and settled in Shafter in 1944. Virginia attended Shafter High School and began attending Jesus Saves International Church (Shafter Pentecostal Church of God), where she met the love of her life, Riland Nixon.

Virginia graduated high school her junior year and began attending Pentecostal Bible Institute in Gilroy. She married Riland on April 16, 1948. Virginia was a homemaker and raised her children that she loved greatly.

In 1977, she went to work at Lerdo School as a cafeteria helper and helped her husband clean classrooms. The Lerdo School staff was like family to them. Upon retirement, they began to travel in their motor home with family and friends from state to state, all the way to Florida and back. They would go to Arizona and become snowbirds, staying all winter, then head to Pismo Beach where they would stay months at a time.

Virginia loved cooking for her family; her specialties were chocolate gravy, homemade biscuits and chicken fried steak, to name just a few. She loved life, her Lord, her husband, her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She also loved her friends and her church family. She said selling out to God was the best thing she had ever done in her life, and she was so thankful for His goodness to her and her family.

Virginia is survived by her sons, Jerry D. Nixon and wife Linda of Bakersfield; Riland Steve Nixon and wife Christine of Bakersfield; daughters Sherry L. White of Bakersfield and Lori A. Seymour and husband Steve Seymour of Shafter; sister Joyce Carr Beck of South Carolina; brother-in-law Jimmy Nixon and wife Joyce of Oregon; brother-in- law Billy Nixon and wife Kaye of Anaheim; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years of marriage, Riland; two brothers, Leon and Vernon Carr; and granddaughter Cassandra White. Viewing for Virginia will be prior to the service on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 8:30 to 10 a.m. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Jesus Saves International Church, followed by interment at Shafter Memorial Park.
