Council nominates Reyna as representative for Air District Board

Approves plans for 97 more homes at Gossamer Grove

The Shafter City Council voted Tuesday night to nominate Wasco councilmember and former mayor and Gilberto Reyna to serve on the San Joaquin Valley Air District Board.

Reyna was selected to be the small city representative on the board. The person must be from either Arvin, Delano, Taft, Shafter, Maricopa or Wasco to be eligible for the position. The only other applicant was Cory Morse of Maricopa.

The council also held a public hearing to approve Tract #7402, which is located in the Gossamer Grove area. It is 80 acres in the northeast side of the Gossamer Grove development. The acreage is to be subdivided into 97 individual lots, with sizes ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 feet. The tract was approved and Lennar Homes will go forward with their plans to subdivide the property.

During the presentation portion of the meeting, the council honored the Shafter High School girls basketball team. The Lady Generals won the South Sequoia League championship this past season, qualifying for the playoffs. The team made it to the quarterfinals in the post-season tournament.

The team was coached by Shawn Pennel, Mike Watts and Juan Zavala. Members of the team received certificates for their achievement. They were Guadalupe Lara, Crystal Villegran, Kaylee Moreno, Ariana Vega, AnneMarie Piuser, Isela Lugo, Addison Watts, Ariana Escalera, Kyla Schooley, Alexia Ramirez and Ilene Cardenas. Vega also was recognized for her selection of South Sequoia League Most Valuable Player of the Year.
