Local runners make records in Boston

Three Shafter runners made the trek to Beantown to compete in the Boston Marathon. They qualified in different qualifying races throughout the year, obtaining times that earned them the opportunity to be a part of one of the most prestigious races in the world.

In addition to the race, the locals took in some Boston culture, attending a Red Sox game, visiting the Farmer's Market, and of course eating a lobster roll.

Missy Espericueta said that the race course was one of the toughest she has ever faced. "The course was difficult, with a lot of rolling hills in the second half. The weather wasn't our friend either, with showers for most of the race."

She said that it made her grateful for the training that she had with her club, the Greyhounds, which prepared them for what they might face in this race.

She commented that the crowds were amazing and that they cheered from start to finish. Espericueta and Peter Frantz posted personal bests for 26 miles, with Frantz posting a time of 2:52:00, and Espericueta ran a 3:40:14. Jose Montelongo, of Golden Oak Elementary School, posted a time of 3:13:28. With their times, all three runners qualified for the 2024 Boston Marathon.

Espericueta said that this experience is one that she will never forget. "This race is the holy grail of running and being a part of it was an honor and a privilege. I can't wait until next year."
