2023 Lady Tigers golf team finishes strong

The Wasco High School girls golf team has once again proven their dominance on the green, securing their third consecutive South Sequoia League Championship title. Following this win, they took runner-up place at the Valley Championship.

Under the guidance of Coach Ed Moreno, the Lady Tigers have continued to set the bar high for their competitors. Moreno has instilled in his players not just the skills to succeed on the course but the values of teamwork and resilience. This season, those values were on full display.

Commenting on winning the first-place prize at the 2023 SSL Championship, Moreno said, "We had set goals in that championship. The first goal was to qualify for the Valley Championship. The second goal was for Abby Salazar to win the tournament. Third was for all five girls to place in the top ten and those five girls to claim all-league honors. And we accomplished all those."

SSL medal winners were Victoria Carreno (3rd place), Liz Millar (5th place), Sesi Rodriguez (6th place) and Amber Newby (7th place). Abby Salazar took home 1st place. She was also recognized as the 2023 SSL's most valuable golfer..

First team All-League went to Abby Salazar, Amber Newby and Vicky Carreno, while 2nd team All-League went to Liz Millar and Sara Adams.

Moreno said of the 2023 Valley Championship. "They had really large shoes to fill. I believe that the girls I was going to have this year would be able to do what the girls did the previous year. In that, they did exactly the same, but they came short by one stroke of winning the title."

As runner-up, Abby Salazar took 2nd place and Liz Millar took 7th place.

In total, the girls finished strong in the season, maintaining a 24-0 undefeated streak over the last three years.

Director of Athletics and Activities Joshua Huddleston said, "Everyone at Wasco High is very proud of the accomplishments of our girls' golf team over the last few years."

"That this year's team performed so well after graduating key seniors from last year's section championship team is a testament to their passion and work ethic as well as to the program Coach Moreno has built. The Wasco girls' golf team is a wonderful example of why I am proud to be a Tiger."

Principal Rusvel Prado added, "Congratulations to the golf girls on their incredible accomplishment of winning the SSL championship! Their hard work, perseverance, and unity have truly paid off, and it's amazing to see them win the championship for the third year in a row."

In store for next year, Moreno said, "Even though every girl on the team experienced success throughout the season, they were not satisfied as runner-up, in which they have vowed to dedicate themselves to trying to bring the title back home."

Moreno wanted to thank his sponsors, including Supreme Almonds, Holtermann Farms, Cecilia Escalera, Paul Farm Management, Albert & Associates, Kern Valley Prison, Gebhardt Farm Management, Creative Builders and Mandelin Farms..

"We could not have accomplished this amazing feat without them."
