Pastor's Corner: Tis the season

Have you noticed that it’s that season again?

The season I am referring to is the silly season we refer to around here as election season. Every two years we go to the polls – except here in California where we mail our ballots – and we decide who we want to represent us and which of the 20 million propositions that end up on the ballot we want passed.

The wonderful thing about our country is we have the freedom to choose who we want to represent us at the local, state, and national level. When we look around the world, not many other countries have the freedom to vote that we as Americans often take for granted.

If you and I could sit down over a cup of coffee and discuss the issues of the day I’m absolutely positive there are issues that we would be in total agreement on, and yet others where we would find stark differences. It is unfortunate in my opinion that the media, news organizations and politicians of every party seize this opportunity every two years to drive a wedge between us so they can gain or maintain power.

I am not here to tell you how to vote. I believe you should vote and let your voice be heard. But let me offer you the following challenge: Make sure you know what you are voting for. Vote for the person and not the party. Most importantly, please do not let this election season cause division between you, your neighbors and your family.

God has not called us to be divided, but to be in unity one with another.

Colossians 3:14: [BEGIN ITAL]Even more than all this, clothe yourself in love. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity. [END ITAL]

The politicians and media want to divide us along economic, racial, educational and religious differences. What I hope we can realize is we are all human beings with the same need to put food on the table, shelter over our heads and to be loved.

Once we realize as a society that no matter how different we may appear to those who are after our vote, when it comes right down to it we really aren’t that different. Let’s come together in unity for our fellow man and live in love, peace, harmony and unity.

Wouldn’t that be a huge slap in the face to those who want to separate and exploit us for their political gain?
