    Betty Jean Grant, a longtime resident of Wasco, passed away on May 25, 2019 at the age of 84. Betty was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on Jan. 1,1935 to Art and Agnes Stip. As a young girl she grew up in Bellflower and Artesia, Calif. During her teens, she gave her life to the Lord and continued in faith until the end of her life. She attended Excelsior High in Norwalk.     For the second straight year, the Kern Valley Broncos ended the Shafter High Lady Generals' softball season in the semifinals of the Valley Championship tournament.     Shafter Post Office letter carriers collected more than outgoing mail recently as they participated in their annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign. They left paper bags a couple of days before the May 11 collection, encouraging residents to fill the bags with nonperishable food items that will be donated to a local church.     Eight apartment units had to be evacuated when Kern County firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 400 block of North Wall Street on Sunday. Just after 9 a.m., the KCFD was dispatched to the fire.     A memorial was unveiled at Veterans Park on Saturday morning during a dedication ceremony held to honor veterans from all branches of the military.
